The Miss Buffalo Scholarship Organization is very proud of our 2016 Miss Buffalo

Baylee Simpson placing 1st, runner up for Miss New York State and taking 1st place in health and fitness at the New York State competition in May.

Crown for the 2017 Miss Buffalo New York Competition

Baylee Simpson is a magna cum laude graduate from The College at Brockport. In four short years she obtained a BFA in Dance as well as a BS in Exercise Science. Her decision to pursue a double major is only a glimpse into how she makes the most out of every opportunity that comes her way. Within her four years spent in Western New York, Baylee has had the chance to not only give back to the entire Brockport community but to the surrounding communities as well. She’s taken on multiple leadership roles, organized campus wide events, and has collaborated with surrounding universities.

Baylee held the position of President of the Brockport Student Dance Organization (SDO), the largest student run organization on campus. Through SDO she has allowed the student body access to the arts through multiple mediums. Although she has developed a strong bond with her colleagues, her desire to bring the arts to the surrounding communities led her to become a member of the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) Brockport Student Chapter.

She currently holds the position of the Public Relations Specialist and Undergraduate Representative. Her work within NDEO included executing a tri-universal guest artist dance residency within The College at Brockport, University of Rochester, and University at Buffalo. She was recently inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts Collegiate Program with High Honors.

Baylee’s active involvement on campus and academic excellence has led her to be the recipient of many awards and scholarships given by the college. Throughout her years she has been a recipient of the Dean’s Academic Scholarship, Rose L. Strasser Service Award, Monserrat Summer Study Scholarship, Susan S. Collier Dance Award, and the Peyton Choreographic Award. Her greatest achievement however, was establishing an educational outreach program within the Department of Dance at The College at Brockport through her Platform The Create Initiative: Empowering our Youth to Succeed through the Arts. This outreach program uses dance students at the college to bring live performance to the local Brockport and Rochester school districts. Since live performance opportunities can be rare for some school districts, the outreach program utilizes this time to allow the students to engage in live art and to also build critical thinking skills.

This past year Baylee has had the opportunity to speak and perform for over 500 students through the development of her Create Initiative. In her experiences she’s discovered that students need the opportunity to creatively express themselves to develop self-confidence, clarity, and focus within other academic subjects. The Miss America Organization already supports a STEM education but Baylee can foresee herself being of great influence to lead this organization to support a STEAM education. After being crowned Miss Buffalo 2016, Baylee’s dream of leading our nation’s youth towards success has continued to expand. She hopes to further work on her platform and leave a lasting mark on the city of Buffalo.
